Executive Mayor Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela and his MMC’s, MPAC Chairperson together with the Department of Environmental and Solid Waste, Department of Physical and Environmental Development, Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs commemorated the World Wetlands Day under the theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature” on the 4th of February 2022 by carrying out a cleaning campaign by a wetland at Mhluzi Ext 1.
The purpose was to celebrate and protect the incredible biodiversity of these beautiful and vital South African habitats. The clean-up was a way of demonstrating that the wetlands are not wastelands. The community must not dump their waste in the wetlands as they need to be protected. Not only do wetland serve as ecosystems support and host of animal and plant life – but they are critically important for the survival of humans too, from the mitigation of Climate Change to the protection of human settlements from floods. If we protect wetlands, we also protect our planet and ourselves. The team continued with the clean-up campaign to Mhluzi Ext 8.
