Eastdene sewer pipeline to be upgraded Residents of Easdene and surrounding areas can now breath a sigh of relief after council approved the upgrade of the sewer lines, running from Zuid Street to Eastdene.
The two main sewer lines, running from Zuid Street to Eastdene, will be upgraded in the 2020/2021 financial year.
The approval shows that the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality listens to residents’ pleas.
The upgrade comes after the sewer pipeline reached its maximum capacity and can no longer cope with the demand of sewer load resulting in constant blockages and leakages.
Upgrades were delayed because the municipality was waiting for Water Use Licence (in line with section 21 of the National Water Act.) The application for the Water Use Licence was submitted on 24 July 2018. As a result, the municipality couldn’t start with the construction of the sewer pipeline.
In the 2017/2018 financial year, council approved a budget to commence with the engineering designs for the project to upgrade the outfall sewer pipeline from Middelburg Extension 00 (Zuid Street) to Eastdene. The engineering designs were completed in the 2018/2019 financial year.
The upgrades were formally approved by Council in January 2021.
The 1.7 kilometre pipeline will run from Zuid Street, underneath Cowen Ntuli, Koets Street and through the Eastdene sports ground and Boncker Street.
