During 1866 the original Middelburg was established halfway between Pretoria and Lydenburg on the farm Sterkfontein
which was purchased by the Durch Reformed Church in Transvaal. The town was first known as Nazareth, but later on
the name was changed to Middelburg. The first erven was sold on 11 March 1867.
The Town Councils of Middelburg and Mhluzi, as well as the Management Committees for Eastdene and Nasaret amalgamated during 1994 to form the Transitional Local Council for Middelburg.
Middelburg was the first town in Mpumalanga to amalgamate in terms of the Local Government Transition Act, and the proclamation to establish the new TLC appeared in the Mpumalanga Provincial Gazette, No 2/1994 on 16 November 1994.
MIDDELBURG COUNTRY CLUB
The Country Club has an excellent 18-hole golf course, a modern club house with a ladies' bar and meals can be enjoyed in a fully equipped restaurant. Other facilities include three squash courts, six tennis courts, a swimming pool and two bowling greens. The club also offers overnight facilities in the form of 40 chalets. The club also has a conference centre.

The local athletics club and marathon club also utilize the facilities. There are a large variety of sports clubs that use the building as a get together facility. The angling clubs, the cycling clubs, the horse riding clubs and the pigeon clubs are all representatives of sport and recreation in Middelburg.
Fishing and skiing are some of the popular sports practised at Middelburg Dam.
A serviced caravan park are on the dam banks for accommodation to campers and anglers.
